I have been a devoted working artist for over 30 years. My paintings provide me a visual voice for expressing the elements of life I hold close to heart — family, community, and spiritual health. Through color and layers of textured materials, I seek to symbolize the building and healing of oneself in connection with one another, nature, and love.

About the Spring Quarterly

About the Spring Quarterly

EmailFacebookLakeland, Florida

Welcome to the Spring Quarterly Invitational 2021, the third in Bohrer Gallery's series of quarterly digital events. Though these shows were initially prompted by the emergence of Covid-19, we hope to continue them indefinitely as we feel that these events put a much-needed spotlight on the talented artists of our community.

This show was made possible by the generosity of Michael Maguire and his company, the Maguires of Lakeland. You can find business contacts for Michael in his booth. Finally, Bohrer Gallery Patronage is available to everyone, you can learn how to become a patron in the Become a Patron section of this show. Patronage includes recognition on our site and in our printed materials, as well as special perks at Fine Art at the Magnolia 2021.

The color and light of the Florida landscape inspire me, as well as various moments of color around me in daily life. My paintings are done from observation, but I aim to incorporate the elements I love about abstraction, such as geometric shape and the materiality of the paint. I reduce what I see down to what is essential to communicate what caught my eye. My work is calm, sometimes playful, and tends to have a sense of place. Artists that inspire me include Lois Dodd, Alex Katz, Agnes Martin, Neil Welliver, Emilio Sanchez, Beatrice Milhazes, Kawase Hasui, Rex Ray, and David Hockney.

I am an organic expressionist. I find inspiration in stones, shells, the movement of the air, and in the shadows as they play across the ground. I explore transcendence and inner journeys. The work is experimental, searching for that perfect pure color, the exact line, the precise curve, stroke, or movement of the brush. I make no preliminary drawings preferring to work in the moment allowing the light, and emotion within to direct me. Working in oil, through layer upon layer of thin glazes, powdered pigments, gold and silver leaf I build upon the canvas communicating my process. With strong color and bold gestures I seek to maintain the organic flow as it is seen in nature. What do I want from my work? I want to stand across the room and see truth looking back from the canvas.

I have always loved to draw. It was the smell of my uncle's colored pencils that inspired me to major in architecture - since art was not an option in the little town in Brazil where I grew up. Since then, art has become my entire way of thinking. In this series, I use a free and loose technique to depict cities around the world. I use color freely, without any commitment to reality, letting the energy flow through the painting and into the viewer. Without people, our cities, monuments, and buildings are cold and lifeless — It’s the energy of the people that inspires me.

Bohrer Gallery's annual creative projects -- including Fine Art at the Magnolia, its scholarship, 4 Squared Makers, the The Florida Arts Journal, and our One Wall Artist Exhibit and Grant program -- would all not be possible without the generous support of those who share our vision of preserving the vitality of the working artists in our communities. Please consider joining our growing circle of patrons by becoming one of our essential annual contributors for 2025. Thank you for supporting the fine arts!

My artwork stems from a love of drawing the human figure. There is nothing quite like the energy that comes from life drawing. My goal is to portray the beauty that I see to others. My figures are nude because it gives them a timelessness, and my vision is to approach the universal human being. When the viewer sees my work, I want them to also see themselves in it. I draw a lot of inspiration from the Italian masters of the Renaissance and Baroque—particularly the rawness of DaVinci’s sketches and the pristine imperfection of Caravaggio’s paintings. My media is predominantly charcoal and chalk, but I sometimes incorporate ink wash and watercolor.
