I was inspired by the four factors of Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory. For Individualism-Collectivism, I present a face divided with one eye closed and the other open. This contrasts the looking inward towards oneself with looking outward towards others. To represent Power Distance, or inequality, I depict a crown melting over a face. Uncertainty-Avoidance, or resistance to change, is represented with a splash of paint across an undisturbed face. Finally, I illustrate Masculinity-Femininity by sculpting a face with a balance of hard and soft angles, or curves. Each combination in Hofstede's framework is a valid way of life, and America shines brightest in its diversity.

Ideas and knowledge are like seeds scattered around a garden. As people or animals move among the plants, a culture grows through the sharing of their ideas and knowledge. In these panels I have selected richly symbolic animals from human culture, animals which in turn share knowledge within their own groups. The animals form an in-group as they cluster around the human faces in each panel, but the parallel structure across the panels illustrates how ideas and culture move between groups — and sometimes grow there.

Birds are nature's accent marks. I wanted to combine the beauty found in our gardens with the bright colors and bold personalities of birds. I tried to emphasize the pinks, yellows, blues, and brilliant greens — colors that describe the beautiful gardens of Florida and the magnificent diversity its birds. I hope you find the humor, whimsy, and beauty that I do in the birds and gardens of our state!

As a child my parents encouraged me to observe, to touch, and to explore our small yard. In my teen years, I discovered science fiction and I just recently read The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide by Doug Adams. What if there are other worlds beyond our planet, what would it be like to explore those? I hope we will preserve the beautiful gardens of the Earth, and of the galaxy, for our children's children's children.

Memories shape our understanding of the world that surrounds us. Reflection on the influences of our childhood allows us to go back to our roots, identify what was helpful, and weed out all that is harmful. We cultivate cultural gardens by pruning away our preconceived notions and remaining open to growth through learning and unlearning — we cultivate beauty through peaceful acceptance.

A self taught artist from Texas, I have been making art for 70 years. Painting 4 Square was a challenge because my works are often large and abstract, but I belong to plein air groups in central Florida and when I think of culture and diversity scenes of Amish farms and zen gardens come to mind. My granddaughter loves making flower arrangements and the painting Future Arborist is from a photograph that melts my heart.

I simply enjoy painting and drawing. I always have, but more so now as my physical health makes me less active than I used to be. Painting provides an escape from my everyday worries, thus improving my mental and physical health. It helps me feel good about myself and keeps my mind busy. These creative escapes are my way of cultivating cultural gardens.

As humans it is our opportunity to cultivate our outer and inner gardens. By focusing on these four steps -- Listen, Love, Kindness, and Joy -- we plant the seeds of connection. First we must deeply listen to one another and to nature. When we listen deeply, we touch the hearts of one another with love. By opening our hands, our hearts, and our minds we cultivate kindness. Deep listening and kindness nurtures flowers into bloom where we can taste pure joy.

My wish, expressed in these paintings, is that we might cultivate native plants in order to help our ecosystem maintain its equilibrium. Whether we are alone, or together, life always finds a way. On the one hand, we can be resilient in isolation: organisms like the mushroom, for example, can thrive where other organisms can't. On the other hand we can come together and mentor one another, spawning new life in others. Our need for companionship or relationship can sometimes become too demanding, however. We should seek a harmony with one another and with nature.

Often, our bodies are scrutinized for the way they look, whether they are deemed to be too skinny, too fat, oddly shaped, or any combination of the above. This can be an extremely isolating experience, despite it happening to the majority of people across the globe. With different cultures comes varying beauty standards, all of which are simultaneously rigid and ever-changing. These pieces aim to display features that we all have to some degree, despite the culture we come from, and to normalize them.

After thinking about this for a while, I realized the show's title is a daily event on a park bench! When sitting on one, you acknowledge the person joining you and when they leave you send them off with good wishes! If the mood strikes, you will find something to start a conversation about with that person, even if it is just about the weather. Sitting on a park bench is a social experience!

I enjoyed the process of thinking about "Cultivating our Cultural Gardens" as it can lead in so many directions. But, in order to go anywhere or create anything one must keep an open mind. "Mommy, what’s the meaning of life?" To care for one-another. Carefully cultivate your cultural gardens, to ensure that you are contributing to the care of others and of all existence. The meaning of life, our purpose, is to be custodians and to consider how our interactions impact others. No one existence is independent of another: our futures and fates are connected and shared.

My artwork was created using scraps of thrift store sweaters and second hand beads and buttons. I use traditional “women’s work” skills to highlight the ingenuity and creativity inherent in the under-appreciated realm of folk art. Needlework has been a facet of folk culture and tribal identity all over the world for a thousand years. It is also very much a tool for personal expression. With my work I am seeking both to connect to the longstanding traditions of women who found creative expression in handiwork, and to create completely new and personal work.

I took the theme of "Cultivating Cultural Gardens" somewhat literally, with the analogy of gardens being our communities. It takes effort and constant attention to grow a beautiful garden, but the results are worth the hours. Each of these lovely flowers, depicted in a strong up-front style, all have different meanings. The sunflower is a symbol of loyalty, the peach rose represents gratitude, the zinnia denotes endurance and the iris stands for wisdom. These little flowers each bring their unique attributes to the success of the whole garden.

With this group of cups, I was thinking about how cultural gardens are not just grown, but also appropriated and commodified. The flowers reference the idea of a garden and are loosely based on Iznik pottery decoration, and the dollar sign references the idea that culture is often shared through the exchange of goods — that culture itself is treated as capital and as a means to profit.

Gardens are a cultivation, a collection, of various elements that work to create one scene and to grow together. Each one of my blocks collects human qualities and nature together to express a culture garden. We are all humans, and underneath our physical attributes we are the same — our skeletons, our brains, our structure. But even with our similarities we should celebrate our differences — our different thoughts, different looks, different pieces of knowledge, and our different ways to express love. If any piece were missing, the world would not look, feel, or grow the same.

I like to share the beauty of the world around us. As we plant cultural gardens, we each share our unique impressions of that beauty. These pieces are my abstract interpretations of beautiful scenes I’ve encountered in the world, and I invite everyone to see and enjoy those scenes through my eyes. As we each try to understand the others’ vision, we become connected and more able to share our love with each other. Love is a by-product of a well planted garden.

Tampa’s feral chickens have called the streets of Ybor City home for over a century. The history of these beautiful birds dates back to 1885, when Vicente Martinez Ybor relocated his cigar factory to Tampa. His hopeful workers, mostly consisting of Cuban and Spanish immigrants, brought their cultures and their chickens with them! Today, Ybor's latin culture — and its wild chickens — links us all to that bygone era. I'm proud of the Cultural Garden that is our Historic Ybor City.

In my military family, I've traveled widely and observed many cultures different from our own. I remember the many art traditions I've seen, the arts are enjoyed by people all over the world regardless of the language barrier. Indeed, the arts are a universal language and easily understood. After I started teaching it became my priority to teach as I had raised my children, through the arts, and to show how similar we are to others... much more alike than different.

I decided to start with watercolor and ink. I painted each wooden surface with watercolor; one square red, one blue, one purple, and one green. Then I use a marker to cover the sides. The grain of the wood spoke to me as I meditated on the meaning behind the idea of cultivating cultural gardens. Four images came to existence, depicting the people and values that are dearest to me.

With these sculptures, I am exploring the relationship between culture and the environment. Clay - as a piece of the Earth itself - can represent fertile grounds for life and ideas, or a landscape which mankind has transformed into a barren place inhospitable to life. I see the green flocked forms both as life and nature retaking a desolate industrial landscape, and as the last life clinging to the surface of a sterile planet.
