We are all humans, and underneath our physical attributes we are the same — our skeletons, our brains, our structure. But even with our similarities we should celebrate our differences — our different thoughts, different looks, different pieces of knowledge, and our different ways to express love. If any piece were missing, the world would not look, feel, or grow the same.

Whether we are alone, or together, life always finds a way. On the one hand, we can be resilient in isolation: organisms like the mushroom, for example, can thrive where other organisms can't. On the other hand we can come together and mentor one another, spawning new life in others. Our need for companionship or relationship can sometimes become too demanding, however. We should seek a harmony with one another and with nature.

Tampa’s feral chickens have called the streets of Ybor City home for over a century. The history of these beautiful birds dates back to 1885, when Vicente Martinez Ybor relocated his cigar factory to Tampa. His hopeful workers, mostly consisting of Cuban and Spanish immigrants, brought their cultures and their chickens with them! Today, Ybor's latin culture — and its wild chickens — links us all to that bygone era. I'm proud of the Cultural Garden that is our Historic Ybor City.

I took the theme of "Cultivating Cultural Gardens" somewhat literally, with the analogy of gardens being our communities. It takes effort and constant attention to grow a beautiful garden, but the results are worth the hours. Each of these lovely flowers, depicted in a strong up-front style, all have different meanings. The sunflower is a symbol of loyalty, the peach rose represents gratitude, the zinnia denotes endurance and the iris stands for wisdom. These little flowers each bring their unique attributes to the success of the whole garden.

My artwork was created using scraps of thrift store sweaters and second hand beads and buttons. I use traditional “women’s work” skills to highlight the ingenuity and creativity inherent in the under-appreciated realm of folk art. Needlework has been a facet of folk culture and tribal identity all over the world for a thousand years. It is also very much a tool for personal expression. With my work I am seeking both to connect to the longstanding traditions of women who found creative expression in handiwork, and to create completely new and personal work.

With this group of cups, I was thinking about how cultural gardens are not just grown, but also appropriated and commodified. The flowers reference the idea of a garden and are loosely based on Iznik pottery decoration, and the dollar sign references the idea that culture is often shared through the exchange of goods — that culture itself is treated as capital and as a means to profit.

Ideas and knowledge are like seeds scattered around a garden. As people or animals move among the plants, a culture grows through the sharing of their ideas and knowledge. In these panels I have selected richly symbolic animals from human culture, animals which in turn share knowledge within their own groups. The animals form an in-group as they cluster around the human faces in each panel, but the parallel structure across the panels illustrates how ideas and culture move between groups — and sometimes grow there.

I was inspired by the four factors of Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory. For Individualism-Collectivism, I present a face divided with one eye closed and the other open. This contrasts the looking inward towards oneself with looking outward towards others. To represent Power Distance, or inequality, I depict a crown melting over a face. Uncertainty-Avoidance, or resistance to change, is represented with a splash of paint across an undisturbed face. Finally, I illustrate Masculinity-Femininity by sculpting a face with a balance of hard and soft angles, or curves. Each combination in Hofstede's framework is a valid way of life, and America shines brightest in its diversity.

About the Mulberry Cultural Center

The Mulberry Cultural Center is a community gallery and classroom located at the crossroads of SR 60 and SR 37. Since our debut in 2015, we have hosted over 30 exhibitions on topics such as photography, fine art, wood working, quilting, and traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute. In our classroom, we host artist talks, photography workshops, paint a-longs, and pottery classes. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 9am-5pm. Free admission.

I decided to start with watercolor and ink. I painted each wooden surface with watercolor; one square red, one blue, one purple, and one green. Then I use a marker to cover the sides. The grain of the wood spoke to me as I meditated on the meaning behind the idea of cultivating cultural gardens. Four images came to existence, depicting the people and values that are dearest to me.
