My work is inspired by familiar landscapes, the colors and beauty of birds, animals and flowers, and the simple forms found in boats and architecture. I paint with acrylics, mainly on canvas, because I am excited by the layering of color acrylic paint allows. Recently I began using charcoal, watercolor pencils, and pastels to add additional levels of interest. My paintings have been described as "soothing"... perhaps they are sensing my effort to bring simplicity and calm to a complicated world.

I simply enjoy painting and drawing. I always have, but more so now as painting helps me feel good about myself and keeps my mind busy. Painting provides an escape from my everyday worries, thus improving my mental and physical health. I have been painting the landscape and culture of Florida for 55 years now, and I've shown in 600 or so local art shows in that time. Now I jury many of those shows based on my lifetime of experience. My work has been displayed and collected throughout the United States.

My paintings are my hardest stories and my best loves. I am a survivor of human trafficking and a long-term Parkinson's diagnosis. Today, I talk with art because my voice breaks and fails me for what I yearn to express. I paint my secrets — painting is my hand, eye and brain therapy. I have a basket full of projects waiting for breaks in my symptoms... I'll get to them. My hands settle like the waves of the ocean, I wait for stillness. I want to share my hope and gratitude, and to tell each one of you that the sun will rise. There is joy in difficult circumstances, there is always something beautiful.

I grew up on an 80 acre farm near the Suwannee River in Florida, where I developed a deep love, respect and fascination for nature. Florida's vanishing wilderness, from the Everglades to Okefenokee Swamp, is a big source of inspiration for me. My work pushes beyond surface description of nature to a deeper, numinous or magical realism — taking the viewer to a liminal space that is more real, more colorful, more alive. I slowly and meditatively carve my scenes into wood block, then transfer them to panel via letterpress or collagraph technique. I got my M.A. in Art Education from U.F. in 1994, and taught art for 17 years.

We are living in a time of dramatic change, outwardly and inwardly. The uncertainties of life in 2020 may make us question our basic assumptions — we may begin to see each other with new eyes. These recent paintings call into question how we interpret what we see. How does light fracture an object? How would sound look if it were painted? These questions reveal how our imagination influences what we see.

My son, Jon, and I are fascinated by the fluidity of glass — even after a sculpture is finished, it's still classified as a liquid. Each work is the product of a three-day "Dance of Fire" in which silver is melted into liquid glass and a sculpture is formed, layer upon layer, over a furnace roaring at 2400 Fahrenheit. Why do we do it? We love Florida's oceans and waterways, and to sculpt glass is to sculpt the ocean. Jon and I have been creating glass together since 2001.

Welcome to our second virtual fine art show, Winter Quarterly Invitational 2020, featuring nationally and locally recognized working artists representing a variety of media! We are grateful for the love and support we receive as we emerge from the hardships of Covid-19 and rebuild the personal connections in our community.

We wish to recognize and thank those kind people and organizations that have been supportive of us: the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance, Charles Brinton Jr. CPA, and Michael Maguire.

The Bohrer Gallery LLC, our fine art shows and scholarship, are founded and curated by local Lakeland artist, Betsy Bohrer. The company embodies her ongoing advocacy for art education and working artists.

Finally, I'd like to thank my family, the artists, and the community for your continued love and support in me and my vision. Together we continue to grow! Much love to you all! — Betsy

For me, robots are vehicles of expression. They generate an emotional response that causes us to question our reality, which is the most important aspect of our existence. Through robotics, we can celebrate the temporary nature of life: they show us a relation or flux between our carbon-based life and the mechanical qualities of its reflection. My sculptures are Contemporary Abstract Realism, a form of Expressionism.

All of my pieces have a story and some type of spiritual connection with Birds, Angels, Flowers or Animals. I like to combine media and textures, which I apply and work using pallet knives, brushes and fine pottery tools to produce intricate image details. This is a slow process, taking approximately 6-8 weeks per work, but I find it healing. It keeps me positive and happy! It is so rewarding to finally see a new piece come together!

My goal is simple. I wish to say that we should never tire of seeing and enjoying the world around us, and that enjoyment can be found in simple things. Bold color and illumination, I feel, brings a pleasant intensity to these scenes of everyday life. Through the expressive qualities of familiar materials — paint, brush, canvas, paper, wood — I try not to create but to uncover the beauty in the world that has always existed.

Often, I am inspired by how light and motion interact with clouds and water. The making and viewing of such art is transformative for me, a spiritual experience even more than an intellectual one. I will always consider myself primarily an abstract artist, though much of my work contains figurative elements. I find abstraction to be difficult, it is a pinnacle of the visual language of art.

To me, art and teaching are one. Each uses a vocabulary of symbols to make a statement about the world. Through magical realism, my landscapes reflect the two worlds in which I live — the real and the imaginary. My aim is to merge imagery of the real and unreal, the romantic and the dramatic. I make my own paint using the nineteenth centry technique of mixing dry pigment with burnt plate oil. I got my M.A. in Art Education and Constructive Design from Florida State University in 1971 and taught art at Brevard Community College for 35 years.

The artistic freedom to create something with woodturning, I feel, is tremendous. All trees are different and present different challenges to the woodturner. I carefully select reclaimed wood for its color, grain, and structure to compliment the asthetic result. I began woodworking 33 years ago, and I started woodturning in 2007. I accept commissions, and I can make a vessel from wood supplied by the customer. This can help preserve the memory of a special place or person.

The role of the artist is to go out into the world and report back what you have seen, even if you don't understand it yourself. With that in mind, I try to keep my artwork as simple as possible, focusing on people and places around me, while using non-traditional materials such as reclaimed wood, cardboard and spray paint. As the results, I hope to create a piece that evokes a moment of contemplation mainly within myself, but hopefully for the viewer as well.

Happiness is a precious thing, it comes and goes so easily. In my oil paintings, I hope to capture those in-between moments and make them shine. Each is a familiar and nostalgic story too brief for words, evoked only through introspection and care.

I do not paint portraits of women. I paint the concept of a woman's emotions, using movement and design to emphasize the feelings within. I have recently begun to re-invent myself, blending what is past and what is new into a dream state of human emotions. One thing I always try to convey, no matter if the feeling of the paining is light or dark, is a sense of hope and an innate strength of character to overcome and go forward with life.

My paintings are my views of the world through consciousness and unconsciousness. Devoid of preconceived ideas and direction, I take a stream of consciousness approach, where the act of doing or the process is equally important to the finished piece. Rendered in ambiguity yet painted with clear definitiveness, organic shapes, rhythmic lines, and glyphic marks develop as I work, leaving each piece open to the viewers interpretation.

I have been a devoted working artist for over 30 years. My paintings provide me a visual voice for expressing the elements of life I hold close to heart — family, community, and spiritual health. Through color and layers of textured materials, I seek to symbolize the building and healing of oneself in connection with one another, nature, and love.

I believe that color can change a person’s heart, and open the door to hope and optimism and faith. I believe that if I tread lightly, and leave room in a painting for the viewer, she will supply the details that she needs, the dreams that she has, the landscape where she would like to live.
