I have been a devoted working artist for over 30 years. My paintings provide me a visual voice for expressing the elements of life I hold close to heart — family, community, and spiritual health. Through color and layers of textured materials, I seek to symbolize the building and healing of oneself in connection with one another, nature, and love.

I am captivated by the peacefulness of wheel-thrown pottery. Like me, my pots are whimsical and slightly off-center. I Raku fire my pots with a copper matte glaze as the dominant base — I am drawn to the serendipity and earthy feel of this technique. I taught ceramics at Valencia College for 7 years, worked in graphic design since 1987, and have received numerous art festival awards across the South East.

We are proud to be involved in Lakeland’s vibrant art community. Between working with local artists and galleries, including the Polk Museum of Art, our days are far from dull. Julie is currently a member of the American Business Women’s Association. Vince served on the Board of Directors of the Imperial Symphony Orchestra in Lakeland. We are both active members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. We are continuously amazed by the variety of activities available and the warmth of the people in our ‘adopted’ hometown.

1986 Rand Mcnally Road Atlas on the passenger seat, scenic back roads, turning down winding lanes advertising 'Fresh Eggs' on weathered hand-painted signs, chickens, sketching cattle watching me watching them, expansive prairies. That's where I find inspiration, drawing, wandering, looking, listening. Then returning to my studio and cranking up the music, I draw. Charcoal, pencil, pastels, inks, color pencil, conte crayon. Expressive line, charcoal wash, bold color. That is me. That is my work.

Lathan Williamson

Lathan Williamson

Orlando, Florida

Lathan Williamson is this year's Fine Art at the Magnolia rising star scholar! Congratulations, Lathan! He is currently studying at UCF.

Lathan Williamson was born in Miami, Florida, and then raised in Atlanta before moving to Lakeland at 11. His early childhood canvas included legos, pencil and pad. He continues to be inspired by everyday experiences, which include his parents, siblings, and the beautiful world around him. Lathan looks for the most effective ideas, personality, and style when capturing subjects of interest and includes perceptions of equality and justice. He constantly explores mixed mediums to find the best voice for each piece and concept. As a graduate of Harrison School of the Arts, he looks forward to learning more about graphic design, architecture, fashion, and beyond by beginning his collegiate studies at the University of Central Florida.

I offer unique, industrial, mixed-metal jewelry combining traditional goldsmithing techniques with iron, granulation, and stone settings. I've been creating things from metal for 35 years, and it's been a thrill! I am fascinated by mechanics, I like the way things connect and move. I am inspired by Hinges, stirrups, grommets, chain patterns, etc. Every item is handmade by me.

My paintings are raw and visceral, they are products of instinct and not intellect. I just want to show my fervent love for painting and color and emotion, and I celebrate all of these with colors that merge, clash, appear and disappear on the canvas. I passionately engage in this process, here is the result.

As an artist who loves biology, when I kayak, hike or go to the beach I take a field guide with me so I can name the various plants and animals that I encounter. Their infinite patterns, textures and colors fascinate and inspire me. I combine structures from plant, fish and fowl to design my own biomorphic forms. I am particularly fascinated by seed-pods because they symbolize both the beginning and the end of a life cycle. Clay is used to construct these textured, undulating seed-pod inspired forms that suggest motion. By focusing on whimsical color relationships and a variety of patterning, my artwork celebrates the diverse and transient qualities of life. After all, in life the only constant is change and while that may be a bit frightening it is also beautiful, exciting and worthy of celebration.

Painting mangroves with an attitude. I love tripping through my paintings. I start with an idea, which I then develop by applying oil paint to birch panels. I feel out the movement or statement of the work by developing light and shadow around the mangrove trees. I try to bring the viewer on a journey through these magnificent mangroves.

My work is inspired by the wood itself. Using simple shapes and forms allowing the beauty of the grain, knots, burl, bark, and the actions of natures fungus and critters to show through. Many of my shapes and forms rely on the ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian pottery which are timeless and pleasing. Other forms are inspired by the features in the wood as it is turned allowing it to be a focal point. All vessels are epoxy coated inside and out so that they can hold water and cut flowers if desired.

I hand fabricate jewelry using sea urchins and shells, capturing the feeling of movement of mythical sea creatures, whether they be swimming, plunging, or floating in the water. The settings for the shells and stones are built out of gold sheets and wires. The tentacles are sculpted by forging round sterling wires on an anvil to achieve a fluid sense of motion. Traditional blacksmithing techniques and hand tools are the foundation of my metals practice.

Posture shows emotion, and emotion tells a story. As a self-taught artist, I discovered the Art of Raku at the age of 11. I derive my inspiration from African and Caribbean cultures and my work is biographical, sharing or relating to life events.

I want the viewer to feel as if he or she could step into my paintings. I want them to feel the essence of the animal, be carried away to a beautiful island in a changing world. To see the creatures that live there as whole and complete... belonging there.

Viewers should enjoy my art. Above all it should be a pleasurable yet dramatically emotional experience. I want to capture the soul of the viewer so that they feel as though they were with me when I created the piece. I want to let them into my world for one moment, however brief it may be.
